A Liberal Proposal.
In the New South Wales Assembly on the 18th inst Mr Walker moved, ‘'That Ibis House resolve itself into a Committee of the Whole to consider the expediency of bringing in a Bill to authorise the Government granting loans at the same rate of interest as they can borrow the money to Trades and Labour Councils and Unions for the purpose of opening and purchasing mines, starting manufactories, purchasing sea vessels and manufacturing reproductive works to provide for the payment of interest on and the repayment of the principal of such loans; to grant powers of inquiry as to the bona tides of any proposal to borrow for the above purpose and the payable character of any proposed scheme ; to provide for the appointment of trustees for works so undertaken ; to give power for the supervision of the construction and the management of such works and give authority to close works so commenced ; to regulate the division of profits among employes; to provide for payments into consolidated revenue fund of a certain percentage of such profits, and for other matters connected therewith. A long debate ensued, and the motion finally negatived by 48 to 17 voteso
