(Prom Our Own Correspondents

Saturday E\ening. It commenced raining here on Wednesday night, and next morning the Creek rose considerably, and very little more work was done" for the week. Most of the claims will be in working order by Monday if the weather con° tinues fine, but there is every appearance, of rain coming on again. There \yas- not much gqld brought down, although, had the weather continued fin?, there would probably have been a big record. 'i Tbo Alios Fell met with an accident qn Friday, the shaft qf £])e w ] }e J breaking, down. At first it looked m

a case of a new axle, but by taking out the shaft and reversing it the difficulty was overcome, and they are dry again and ready to go to work on Monday morning. The King Solomon also came to grief just as they were pumped dry. The!bucket came adrift from the rods, necessitating taking the pump up, but also have repaired damages, and water is going down fast. The Venture received considerable damage through some one falling a big tree on the sidling, which came down on their claim, smashing their fluming and bringing them to a standstill.

I hear that the Southern Cross Company have struck water, and are in softer rock. This is a good sign that they are close to the quartz, and we can expect to hear that they have struck the reef any day. Mr W. Collins has been appointed legal manager of the Davis & Carr Company. This is a step in the right direction, as a local man must be better able to look after the interests of a company than a man located in another province. Mr H. Patterson had an exhibition in his window on Saturday night—a very pretty little winter scene, the handiwork of our talented local taxidermist, Mr Watts. The centre-piece was a dead gold-finch, which some one ticketed Mr W. H. Phillips, " avisdefunctus." We had also some amusing cartoons on view, one of which depicted a horserace. Mr Phillips' horse came to grief early in the race, Mr Hursthouse sailing along grand till he came to an obstacle, "labelled "four bob a day," and sundry picks and shovels, when he exclaims, " Oh, dear, 1 shall never get over this." In the meantime Charlie ha*passed all obstacles, and is up to the winning-post—so mote it be. I noticed a letter from the Manager of the Pelorus Guardian in the Times of the 27th inst., in which he say?, " I notice a letter written by " A Miner " at Mahakipawa, &c." lam quite sure that no miner here would be the author of such cowardly and untruthful accusations as were expressed in letters in the Marlborough Times, signed, " Cullensville Miner," " Mahakipawa Miner," &c. I should say these effusions were written by some one who " draws the line at men of the Dick Seddon stamp," which I don't believe a genuine miner in the community does. If the writer was afraid to put his own name to his letters, why not find a nom de plume nearer the truth, say, "Cow-spanker," or " Wool-bale," and not foster his pervertions of truth on Cullensville miners. Monday. It has been raining heavily, and there is-every appearance of a flood. I am afraid we shall have plenty of spare time this week to talk over the election. There was some little excitement on Saturday, several bets being booked, Mills against the field being freely offered.
