The Waimea-Picton Candidates.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —With your permission I should like to make a few remarks which will serve as a beacon to the electors before recording their votes on Friday next. Every elector is now conversant with the views held by the candidates. As Mr Phillips is out of the running I pass him over, and will deal with Mr Mills and Mr Hursthouse, as the race lies between them. It is well known that some of Mr Mills' supporters are anxious to see him out of Haveloek, as Mr Mills has a lot of old shoes which he will not carry with him, but will leave them behind him for the benefit of the shoeless elector, whoever he may be. Others again vote for him because of his residential qualification, but qualification without ability I am sure is not good enough to send Mr

Mills to Parliament, noi' does it in any way give him a preferential claim over Mr Hurst-house. Mr Mills is pledged to a party, Mr Hursthouse goes in a free-lance, and is the man who ought to be returned if we are to do ourselves justice. Mr Mills' speech is a commixture of Oppositionist views ably dished and placed before the electors with a blue flag oscillating over it, to keep the flies off I suppose, while the electors are en fete. Space, sir, will not-alloW- me to say all I should like, so I conclude by saying that I am glad to see hundreds have, more are, and all will have recovered their reason before polling day, and we shall by a large majority place Mr Hursthouse at the head of tha poll. For in my opinion our interests cannot be assured unless we return a hard working man, and one of ability, integrity, and energy. I am, etc., An Elector. Landing Plaoe Wanted. TO THK KDITOR. Sik,— Any one who has travelled, as I have frequently done, by boat from Picton to Havelock, cannot fail to have been struck by. the singular apathy displayed by those in authority, who, by the way, do not probably travel that way very often, with regard to the want of a proper landing place for passengers at Mahakipawa. In the course of conversation with Mr Smith, the mail-carrier between Havelock and Cullensville, he expressed himself very forcibly on the matter, and informed me that a large sum of money had been expended jn making a landing at the 'Grove,' whore fchei'e is always deep water, whilst the lniserablo apology for a landing at Mahakipnwsi, whloh is completely useless at low watov, is nil that lias boon done in that locality for the convenience of the travelling' public during the 9i>

years. That such a state of things should be allowed to exist is shameful, and it is a pity that those who are responsible for its existence could not be compelled to wade to and from the mail-boat daily, up to their knees in odorous mud, until they remedied the grievance. I am, &c, One Who has Waded.
