Gold Discovery at Kanieri.

. Some talk was created in town yesterday (says the West Coast Times of Friday) over the discovery of gold on the Hokitika Beach Company’s claim at the Kanieri Bridge. The company recently purchased the centrifugual pump formerly used at the Three-mile, and with the aid of a powerful steam engine, rented from Mr Maunder, have put down a pumping shaft ten feet deep in the river bed not far from the Kanieri; Town Hall. A test of dirt taken from the shaft gave the good return of Idwt. to the load. Yesterday, however, the , wash proper was struck, giving the handsome return of Idwt. 6grs. to the dish. The shaft is not bottomed yet. It is the company’s intention to open up a paddock 16ft. by ,14ft. immediately, and before tie river rises, as .the gronud is known to be rich. The pump is working easily at present, the engines haying, to ,-be stopped occaaionly to allow the water to accumulAte; Thin being tha case

the machinery should he able to keep the paddock dry when opened. The company anticipate a yield of 40oz from the bottom of the paddock, which, as the sinking is only 10 feet, will not take long to open.”
