Onamalutu.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The usual quiet of the valley has been considerably disturbed during the last few days. The weather, which wore an uncertain aspect on the morning of Saturday, the 2nd inst., at last broke in showers of rain, which continued through the night. . On Sunday the rain was accompanied by violent gusts of wind, and during the latter half of the day the Onamalutu river rose with such rapidity: that the valley was speedily filled with a raging and destructive torrent. : The chief damage; was done among fences and roads, but several sheep, .are , reported missing from the low-lying grounds bordering the course of . the river, and the suspension bridge was broken into a complete wreck. The flood was considered as high as any hitherto known in the valley, a number of houses, having their lower portions flooded, and large logs being carried a considerdistance over the land. After attaining its maximum j height, \ Hie water rapidly subsided) and the settlers are now busily employed in repairing the property damaged by, the flood. A number of large slips’ on the sides of the hills occurred during the Sunday. Our local sawmilier, I am sorry to say, has been put to considerable inconvenience by the damage done to his tramway and bridge. He is a per-: severing man, and the loss of time and the disarrangement of bis work by the flood, are reviewed' with regret by his neighbours. A successful Band of Hope meeting was held in the schoolroom on the Bth ult. Mr Barker’s Sunday night service was necessarily postponed, and was conducted by him on the Wednesday evening instead. In mining matters I have nothing particular to renort.
