Lecture at Canvastown.

Mr Ensor, senior, gave a lecture on " South Africa," in the above schoolroom on Monday last, in aid of the Canvastown Church. The building was filled, and many were unable to get a seat, or even standing room. Mr J. I. Hart in the chair. Mr Ensor gave a short historical account of the settlement of the Cape by the Dutch, the subsequent occupation of it by the English, and then went into the wars which took place with various chiefs, both in Capetown and Natal, in many of which he was personally engaged. The lecture from beginning to end was a complete success. The descriptive and humorous power of the lecturer was well displayed, and kept all that could find room in the building in marked attention until the finish. The getting up of the whole thing may be placed to the credit of Mr Henry Rutland, but for whom our Church would not be in the creditable state of repair that it is now in.

It was arranged that the lecturer should get a spell after the first part ended by some local singing, the performers being Messrs Henry Rutland, Thomas McDonald, James Hughes, jun., Aulquist, and Boyd, all of whom acquitted themselves well. Mr Hughe's hunting, song being much applauded, the chorus quite delighting all hands. Afterwards a vote of thanks to Mr Ensor for his able and instructive lecture was carried unanimously, and a sufficient sum of money realised to place the Church out of debt, the meeting then broke up.
