Public Library.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —The singular apathy of the residents of Havelock with regard to the Public Library is, to- me, both extraordinary and unaccountable. For many' years past not more than half a dozen have regularly subscribed, and the difficulties in the way of exchanging books, &c., have compelled even some of this small number to withdraw 1 their support. Ever since the removal of the books to the Town Board office some years ago, and until very recently, Mr R. Jones and his son regularly opened the library to the public once weekly, in addition to very obligingly changing books at all times when called upon to do so for the few who subscribed; but even their patience became exhausted, and the library is now practically closed.
Havelock neglect in this direction is the more remarkable when contrasted with the fact that Canvasfcown, with its limited and scattered population, has a library containing between seven and eight hundred exceedingly well selected volumes reflecting great credit intelligence and sound judgment of its committee, which is well supported, and new and valuable books are being constantly added to its catalogue. 1 would consider it a favour if you, Mr Editor, or any of your readers could suggest any plan by which the HavePublic Library can be placed upon a more satisfactory footing. Our fellow townsman, Mr L. Brinck, I am given to understand, kindly offered to give his services gratuiously for the purpose of opening it to the public regularly at least one night in the week, and only 1 stipulating for a cord of firewood and • sufficient kerosene to supply the warmth and light necessary during the, winter months. I am not, however, aware whether his very kind and liberal offer has mot with the consideration it merited from those in authority.— I am, &0., Resident.
