Death of Mi* Lahmann. The New Zealand Athletes. H.M.S. Orpheus—A Hoax. Ministars are now all in Wallin often busy preparing for the approaching session. The labour agitation, which threatened strikes in the railway, telegraph, tramway, woollen mills, &c., are, happily for all concerned, averted, wiser' counsels having prevailed. Very cold weather with strong gales of wind has been experienced here the last few days. The Supreme Court sessions opened to-day with a heavy civil and criminal calender. Mr Lahmann, M.L.C*, of Greymouth, died on Saturday night. In the amateur athletic champion meeting at Sydney the New Zealand competitors were very successful, they taking, out of the twelve events for which they entered, seven firsts, five seconds, and two thirds. M'Kelvie (Dunedin) won the one and three mile walking matches; Hempton (Invercargill) the 100yds in 10£sec; Morrison (Timaru) the one and three mile flat race, doing the mile in 4rain BSfsec; Lusk (Auckland) the 120yds hurdle race. The report that the New Zealand Times had changed hands is denied, but I learn on good authority that Captain Baldwin,, the reported new proprietor, took possession to-day. Mr A. Fisk, late of Picton, has become mine host of the Oriental Hotel here. Mr Bird, R.M. and Warden, Reefton, recently suspended by Justice Department, was banquetted at Reefton on Friday, and presented with a purse of sovereigns. The subject of his dismissal is likely to be brought before the House. The reported discovery of the wreck of H.M.S. warship Orpheus proved to be a hoax. Mr 0. Inman, of Okaramio, who opposed the granting letters patent to Mrs Maekay, of Nelson, for Stowell’s Rheumatic Exterminator, will probably be .successful.
