~. “ Anglicanus,” the English correspondent of the Sydney Mail, speaking of. the leading jockeys, -says,;— ‘‘!A wonderful bound to the front has been chronicled for young Thomas Loates, who won four races only in 1885, 12 in ' 188(5, 21 in 1887, and 58 in 1888, is now easily at the head of the poll with i!67 winners out of a total of ■674mounts. His first win .was in 1883, : when, weighing at the time onlv 4st 4lh, he carried off the Maiden Riders Plate at Newmarket, on a colt of Lord Rosebery’s. This past season he has been in grand form, as well as in good Ineic,Tor,* owing to P. Barrett’s services being required by Mr Rothschild for Morglay, "the Duke of Portland put him up on Donovan at Epsom, and he won the Derby on tlfe first occasion of his ■having 1 a mount in the ' race. In one weelc he succeeded in adding 15 to his record of winning rides, and in addition to the' Derby He won the Lincolnshire Handicap, Chester Cup, Portland Stakes (Leicester),' Goodwood Stakes,; Champagne Stakes (Doncaster), Great international‘Breeders’ Foal Stakes (Kemptdn Park), and Great Foal Stakes, and Rous Memorial Stakes at Newmarket. A wonderful season this f<^a'j r 6uth~df years,' and a grat :future mdy:aafely be; predicted for him if he keeps steady. Mr Milner has given'bini £ISOO for the first call on his services, and Mr Maple £750 as his second master.”
