LOCAL NEWS.
We would remind our readers that the Pelorus Jockey Club races take place to-morrow at Kaituna. Besides the races there will be the additional attraction of the Nelson Bijou Band, which we have no doubt will attract a great many only to hear the music. There will also be a dance in the evening, at which it is expected there will be a large number present.
Nominations for the Pelorus Licensing District will be received to-morrow. The “ Waitapu,” Captain Westrupp, left Wellington on Sunday morning at 7 o’clock, and arrived at Havelock at 9.80 the same evening, having called at several places along the Sounds, She had a fine passage over, and had a general cargo, but only two passengers for the Sounds. She left again yesterday morning for Nelson. The following candidates were no.ahr ated for the Havelock Licensing Committee, and as the number nominated does not exceed the number required, were declared duly elected: — Messrs T. Brown, A. Made, W. Perry, J. H. Reynolds, and Y. 0. Venimore. There were some large bush fires in the Pelorus and Kaituna valleys on Saturday, and the whole district was enveloped in smoke. The smoke was particularly unpleasant to travellers, and also to those in town.
A reward of £5 is offered by the Pelorus Road Board to any person giving such information as will lead to the conviction of any one setting fire to the bush or grass on or near the public roads.
A man came into town on horseback about 2 o’clock this afternoon, and reported at the police station that he had found a man named Campbell, a wagoner, lying dead about two miles beyond Springlands. He had his wagon and team, and his neck was in some way jammed by the brake. Constable Cameron was despatched to the scene, fhe deceased was in the employ of Mr Thomas Carter, of Hillersden. — Marlborough Express, February 8.
PELORUS ROAD BOARD. A meeting of the above Board was held on Wednesday last, February 4. Present; Messrs W. J. Brownlee (in the chair), Dillon, Davies, Inman, and T. Looms. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The outward correspondence having been read, letters were read from J. Moore re ditch opposite his residence, Picfcon Road Board re Waikakaho road, J. W. Cullen re transfer of roads.
The following tenders were received for collecting the dog tax : —H. Reader, 6d per head; J. W. Taylor, Is; W. T. Erskine, Is; W. Patterson, Is; H. Sergeant, Is. The lowest tender was accepted subject to a guarantee being given. It was resolved—
That Mr Simonsen be seen by the Inspector re blocking up ditch and causing flood water to remain on public road.
That the board accept the new' line of road at Mahakipawa as shown on Mr Wilson’s survey, and also transfer the old lines of road to Mr Cullen in exchange for land required for the new roads.
That the Inspector be empowered to repair the road through the township of Cullensville subject to Mr Cullen’s approval. That the Secretary write and instruct Mr Turner to repair the culverts along the Rai Valley road to the Pelorus bridge. That a reward of £5 be offered to any one giving information that will lead to the conviction of anyone setting fire to the bush or grass on or near the public roads. That Mr Brown be written to and asked if he will be willing to pay half . the expense of a new bridge at Totara the Hill in place of one burnt through his fire. That tenders be called for a new bridge at Totara Hill; tenders to be in by February 22. That £l3 10s be voted to the Picton Road Board to do the work required at Waikakaho.
That the bridge on the MahakipawaKaituna road, and the fencing at the Pelorus he left in the hands of the Inspector. That the track at Deep Creek be cleared of scrub. That the Inspector have power to deal with all flax on the public roads. That the Inspector have the holes filled up in the Kaituna road, to make the road passable going into Long Valley so as to get gravel, and to get the bridge at Dangerous Creek renewed. After passing accounts for wages, &c., the Board adjourned.
