THE FEDERATION QUESTION.

(Per Press Association). London, January 29. Sir W. Robinson has been interviewed by the Pall Mall Gazette, and said that Melbourne was the real capital of Australia. It was likely the approaching Conference would produce Federation for the purposes of defence, but he was not sanguine that, political Federation would be speedily brought about. January 31. Sir C. G. Duffy in an article in the Contemporary Review -urges the Government and the Opposition to induce Parliament to declare the federation of Australia of high importance to the interests of the Empire and to invite the colonial Legislative Chambers to federate. If the Queen appointed Earls Roseberry and Canarvon to carry 1 such a resolution to Australia and confer with the delegates from the colonial legislatures, federation would at once be achieved. Melbourne, January 21.

Tho Australasian says : —The New Zealanders quickly found out the weakness underlying Mr Deakin’s passionate phrases and are now troubled at the astonishing difierence between his words and bis acts, Ne.v Zealand co-operates with us in naval defence; she can co-operate with us in other matters, but she has little reason to submit to federal Government unless all the markets of Australia are fully thro.vn open to her products and manufactures.
