Wellington, February 8. The early closing movement, which has already been in active operation at Christchurch and Auckland for some time, is now taking definite shape in Wellington, and a meeting of its supporters will be held in the course of a few days. Correspondence received from the Early Closing Association lately formed at Christchurch shows that its members have resolved to seek in the first place the closing of shops at one o’clock on Saturday afternoons, with Friday night for late business, hoping in time to educate the public up'to doing without night shopping altogether. . The Arawa left, Rio,' homeward bound, on Friday last, her cargo of frozen meat being in good condition, Dunedin, February 3.
The wharf-carters and expressmen have formed a Union for the protection of their interests. This is the ninth union formed here during the last six months, the total membership being about 2,300'. The attendance at the Exhibition lass week was 29,582, of which the paid admissions represent 19,232. Since the exhibition has been open the paid admissions were 208,588, the total receipts to date being £14,212. Although not made public, it is said that about one third of the exhibits have been judged. Auckland, February 3.
At a meeting of the Auckland Stud Company to-day, held to consider a letter from the Bank of New Zealand, asking for a reduction of the Company’s account by providing £10,030 new capital on the settlement of the
Bank’s indebtedness, it was resolved to wind up the Company and dispose of the assets by sale or otherwise. Hokitika, February 3.
There are increasing good gold yields from the Back Creek, and population is setting in there to a considerable extent, The auriferous country, miners assert, would equal Kumara if a large water supply were procurable. A boy about twelve years of age, son of Mr Robert Park, and nephew of the well-known canoeist, was drowned tonight. He was in a boat with his father and another man, and the current carried the boat over the bar. The deceased was drowned in the surf, but the two men were rescued. The body has not yet been found. Christchurch, February 4.
A man named Frederick Cooper was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment yesterday at the R.M. Court for obtaining a night’s lodging under false pretences at the Christchurch Club. The nights Lords Onslow and Carrington stayed at the club Cooper knocked at the door, giving his name as Rhodes. He asked for Mr Walker’s room, and said Walker told him he might use it. He also stole an overcoat from the Club. The defence was that he had been drinking, and mistook the Club for the Occidental Hotel, where he intended to get a bed. Timabu, February 4. Anderson, doorkeeper of Worth’s circus was summoned yesterday for assault. It appears that on the last night here some lads got in under the canvas. These were cleared out roughly, and a mob of boys outside made a dis-, turbance. The door-keeper got help, and rushed them all away, giving some of them severe blows with loaded whips, and more than one innocent person came in for a share.
