TRAMWAY QUESTION.
The scheme for constructing a tram or light line of railway from Gisborne to Ormond and Patutahi, is still attracting the attention of certain Southern capitalists. One of them writing recently to a friend in Gisborne on the subject says ; “ It appears that it would be necessary to purchase land along the proposed route on which to lay the line, instead of using the road way. This would add much to the expense (the road requiring as 1 understand to be raised several feet) that Mr and the others think that it would not be feasible to carry the concern out on that basis. Will you send ine a delayed wire on receipt of this letter, telling me what your views are on this point, and whether you think the present roadway could be made available.” In reply to the above full information has been forwarded, showing that the cost of the line by laying it through private property would be only slightly more than if laid along the road, owing to lhe fact that the grade throughout is similar. It has , been also pointed out that no cuttings or embankments would be required, nor would it be necessary to build the line “ several feet above ground.” In some places the proposed route would lay through Government reserves. If the County Council could see its way to allow the tram to run along the road, we believe that before twelve months time Gisborne would be in steam communication with Ormond and Patutahi. As the project of using the road meets with opposition, it is to be hoped that the Council will see its way to offer every reasonable facility to men of capital for undertaking so important a work as is now in contemp'ation.
