[Own Correspondent.] Auckland, December 18. A man named Barron, alias Starkey, attempted suicide yesterday by hanging himself in a police cell. He had concealed a belt about his person. He was sentenced to 14 days for drunkenness. Forty thousand people visited the city baths during the year. The City Council are erecting a suspension bridge 700 feet long across the cemetery gully. While a section 120 feet long was being elevated yesterday a link of a chain broke, and the section fell to the ground, a distance of 70 feet, being completely smashed. December 19. Reginald Bernard Fitzpatrick was committed for trial yesterday on a charge of indecent assault on a child ten years of age. Bishop Selwyn left by the Manapouri for Sydney yesterday, en route for England. Mr. David Nathan laid the foundation stone yesterday of a new Jewish synagogue in presence of a large assemblage.
