Prorogation of Parliament.
THE GOVERNOR’S SPEECH. [beuteb’s telegrams.] Melboubnb, December 12. Parliament was prorogued this afternoon by his Excellency the Governor, who in the course of his speech on the occasion remarked that the session han been distinguished by the magnitude and fruitfulness of the labors undertaken. He congratulated members upon the unam mity displayed in passing the various
resolutions relating to federation ana mnexation. Representations which hac >een made to the Imperial Governmen lad only been partially successful. A satisfactory protectorate had, however ilready been establishedover theSouthen. .tortion of New Guinea, and he hopec that this step was only the precursor o. more extended jurisdiction in the Westen Pacific. His advisers would continue also earnestly to watch the effect of th< French Recidiviste movement, and in cast if necessity would take such further steps is might be found necessary. It wa ■ncouraging to observe that (he imperia Government promised to legislate for the establishment of an Australian Federa Council. Reference was also made t< the Land and Railway Bills, and in con elusion His Excellency declared that the jrosperity of the colony had been main aitied and augmented during the pat: year.
