WAIMATA ROAD BOARD.

A meeting 0! the Waimata Road Board was held in the County Council Ch&mbsra last evening, present—Messrs, Ferris (in the chair), Tutcheu, Trimmer, Gray, and Gannon. The rate lists were gone through and signed. The minutes of special meeting were read and confirmed.

Mr. Croll wrote that he had spent £9 on Fox Street, and asking that the amount be refunded. The proposal was not entertained. Mr. Gray read the following report of the Committee appointed to examine the works most necessary to be done in the road district:—

Report of the Committee appointed by the Waimata Road Board to ascertain the works most necessary to be proceeded with: —Te Hapera Bridge.—The Committee have inspected the site, and think that a bridge of 70ft. span, 12ft. wide, would be put up for about £BO. There is a swamp on the road leading from Gisborne towards the proposed bridge, which would entail a heavy expense to make passable for dray traffic. It extends for about 200 yards. The Committee recommend that a road should be obtained if -possible through sections 35 or 86, to avoid the expense of making the present road. The Committee are of opinion that a drain should be cut from the corner of Ballance street along the north side of Clifford street into the Waimata River, it being the natural outlet. The drain to average 2ft. Gin. in depth, 3ft. wide, Ift. at bottom, all earth to be re moved not less than Bft. from the drain. A shoot will be required at the end of the drain, to be 2ft. wide, Ift. deep, sheathed with zinc, estimated to cost about £lO. Four culverts will be required 12ft. long; estimated cost, about £4 each, one culvert 18ft. costing about £6. A box drain is required in Russell street, 16ft. long, 3ft. wide, 3ft. deep. The Committee recommend that a bridge should be put over the Taruheru Creek, on the road leading to the Makauri by Tietjen’s, and that the Turanganui Road Board should be written to asking them to pay half the cost of the bridge. The manuka should be cut on VVi Pere street from Ormond road to Clifford street, including the latter, and Stout street; also on Sheehan street, from river to Ormond Road and Russell street.—Charles Gray, Chairman of Committee.

The report was adopted on the motion of Mr. Trimmer seconded by Mr. Tutchen. .ar. jLuumim moved, •• inat tuw A-'overty Bay Road Board bs written to asking them to join this Board iq erecting a bridge over the Taruheru at the Mill Road, to connect the two Boards. Mr. Trimmer seconded.—Carried. Mr. Croft, who was present, explained that he had communicated with a number of property owners who were desirous of having a bridge over the Hapera creek, lie had an idea that he could promise at least £25, and probably much more. Air. Tutchen did not think the Board could give much more than £35 towards the work, winch was roughly estimated to cost £BO. Mr. Gray thought it advisable to adjourn the discussion until it had been ascertained what the road leading to the bridge would cost. Mr. Gannon suggested that the bridge might be constructed under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act. Mr. Ferris pointed out that that mode had already been thought of, but it was thought that by getting subscriptions from the owners and subsidising it the work could be done more expeditiously. The question was adjourned till next meeting. The Chairman explained that the cheque due by the Poverty Bay Road Board was available. Mr. Gray proposed “ That Messrs. Tutchen, Gannon, and Ferris be a deputation to wait on Mr. De Lautour with regard to a road near the ford known as the island.” It was resolved that Messrs. Tutchen and Ferris wait on a surveyor to-morrow, and get specifications drawn out for proposed works. It was decided to call for tenders for clearing of streets, etc., at ouce. This concluded the business.
