Lake Coal Company will immediately proceed with the construction of their railway, which is to be seven and a-half miles in length. The line is expected to be. in running order in eight months. Balclutha. December 9. Frank Mortnn, a carpenter of Dunedin, who had been working here for some months, has disappeared. Circumstances lead to the suspicion of drowning in the river. Beefton, December 9. Mr. Menteith, addressed a meeting of his constituents here on Saturday evening. His speech on the whole was hostile to the Government. A vote of thanks and confidence was passed. CnnisTCHURCiT. December 9. The Kaikoura’s passage from Plymouth to Hobart is the fastest on record. The City Council decided last night to take steps to raise a loan of for 50 years, at 5 per cent., for rebuilding bridges, erecting gas lamps, channeling, fire prevention, and a tramway to the new cemetery. Dttnettn. December 9. A deputation of the Chamber of Commerce waited on the premier yesterday in reference to the unsatisfactory working of the Customs tariff. Mr. Stout rep ied that the matters would be looked into next session, but at present no effort would be made to equalise the duties.
