Napier News.

[Own Correspondent.] Napier, December 4. The friendly societies held their annual fete yesterday afternoon, instead of the Prince of Wales’ Birthday. The procession was not as large as previous ones, the Druids and Oddfellows not taking part, but there was a good display of banners and regalia. The sports on the recreation ground were very successful. George Lawson and William King, charged with burglary at Runanga, Taupo road, and stealing a watch, money, and other articles, were acquitted. Prisoners had confessed to a constable the commission of the offence, but it appeared there had been a sort of promise that it would be better for them if they did so. His Honor told prisoners they owed their escape to the of the arresting constable. Fifiy-two men of the Armed Constabulary, in charge of Sub-Inspectors Gudgeon and Fortt sque, and Captain P. C. Anderson, quartermaster, arrived here by tho Government steamer Stella yesterday, and proceeded to Petane en route, for Tokano, wher they will be employed in road making. At Petane they played a cricket match in • nnings with the Imps, and were defeated by 80, the Imps scoring 121, and the A C.’s 41. At a mec’ing of the Borough C< uneil last nig’it the lank overdraft was staled to be £5,357.
