AMUSING MISTAKE.

A correspondent writes :—The following I laughable mistake that occurred to the first . Duke of Wellington, when ranger, having J charge of the famous Burham beeches, is I recalled upon seeing an advertisment in I this paper concerning Mrs Loudon’s Ency.-fl clopeedia of plants. Mrs Loudon, who 1 always signed herself J. C. Loudon, wrote I to the Duke for a permit to view the famous -J old breeches. This was not a strange thirw jJ for the authoress of a standard work, that nc9| gardner should be without, to do, but unfor-ifl tunately she wrote badly. In due course thjV note came to the Iron Duke, who stared at J it, for he thought Bishop Cuwford, whjfl signed himself J. C. London, x had him for a permit to view his “ o d breeches," so his Graeecalled his said “ John, fold up my old Waterloo and take them to the Bishop of London my compliments," and he left to tell John Russell who was Premier, that Bishop of London was mad.
