[Per United Press Association.] Napier, November 17. Another line of colliers to trade between this port and Newcastle is proposed. Messrs C. Dolbel and Co. have purchased the threemasted schooner Rio with which to commence a fleet. The schooner is 317 tons register, and carries 500 tons of coal on a draught of 12 feet 6 inches. Nelson, November 17, Mr. Harding, of Mount Vernon, the head of the Good Templar order, is now on a visit to Nelson, where he has delivered several addresses. Dr. Leggatt, who was stupidly shot in the hand by a Nelson volunteer, is rapidly recovering, Duneein, November 17. The foundation stone of the North East Valley Presbyterian Church was laid on Saturday afternoon, by Prof. Salmon. The Dunedin Gold Dredging Co. obtained 224 ounces for four weeks work in the Clutha river. At the annual meeting of the Otago Institute, Mr. Petrie, the President, delivered an address on “ Some scientific duties of the Government of New Zealand.” He referred to the reckless destruction of the New Zealand forests, and pointed out the necessity for the Government to conserve the same, and also to plant young trees. He urged one of the scientific duties which a Government ought to discharge was to establish scientific and technical schools. Another duty was the establishment of model farms, where young men might be instructed in the propagation and culture of tobacco, oranges, bananas sugar and other products of tropical climates. The Government should get the native /lorn and fauna properly classified, and he thought no abler man can could be fouund to undertake this task than Dr. Hooker of the Kew Gardens, England. Mr. Kirk of Lincoln College, Christchurch, and Mr. Cheeseman of the Auckland Museum were eminently fitted to fulfil the position of Collaborateurs in such an undertaking. Auckland, November 17.
The City of Sydney arrived from San Francisco at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The passage was uneventful. Passengers: Cabin— Auckland—Sir John Hall. Misses J. A. and D. Campbell, Mr and Mrs Babwell, Mr. A. There are 10 cabin and 34 steerage for Sydney.
