By the latest files we are in receipt of news of the China Navigation Company’s steamer Changchow, which, as was reported by cable at the time, was wrecked off the coast of Queensland on October 24. It appears that She struck on the Breaksea Spit on the morning of that day, and es she began to fill rapidly, was beached by Captain Young about six miles to the south of Sandy Cape. The steamer Taldora went to the spot from Brisbane with a diver, pumps, and other appliances to render assistance. These latter, however, proved useless, as the Taldora could not get near enough to the stranded vessel to work them, and, in consequence, the Brisbane agents wired instructions to Sydney to despatch heavy pumping gear and to procure, if possible, the sendee of the engines which floated the Sorata. It was further proposed to construct a coffer dam round the Changchow, in order to float her by that means. She is reported to be firmly embedded in sand, with her upper deck three feet under water. As was stated in the cablegram, no lives were lost, all hands, including 120 Chinese, being landed safely.
