NORTHERN ASSURANCE COMPANY. TRANSFER OF AGENCY. LARGE AND TOWNLEY BEG TO NOTIFY that they have been appointed Agents for the above Company, and are prepared to renew current risks, and to entertain new proposals. LARGE AND TOWNLEY, Gladstone Road. 543 "MARORO” Will Stand during the present season at the Stables lately occupied by Mr. James Carden. Makauri. /OWNERS of really "ood mares should not loss v sight of the opportunity afforded of the services of such an animal as MARORO—as he is closely related to the very best blood now running in England. MARORO is a beautiful liver-colored Chestnut standing Sixteen hands; and showing a quality of Bone and Substance equal, if not superior, to anything yet bred in New Zealand. In 1876 Maroro was selected by his breeder (Mr. H. Redwood, of Spring Creek, Blenheim) to represent his colors for the Dunedin Cup of that year, and notwithstanding that two Victorian horses and all the New Zealand cracks were amongst the entries, was at once installed first favourite ; and but lor a very severe passage, owing to bad weather prevailing, no doubt could be entertained but that he would have won the great event. In 1877, as a four-year-old, MARORO was exhibited in Blenheim, and received the FIRST PRIZE as the Best Thoroughbred Sta’lion on the ground. A glance at Maroro’s Pedigree is sufficient to show that a more purely bred animal has never yet had his services tendered in Poverty Bay. Kenehn, correspondent of the “ Australasian,” writing from Christchurch on June 29th last says “ In the we’l-sheltcred and grassy paddock, which has been the early home of so many animals whose names are now historical in the anna's of the New Zealand turf, was a group of five yearlings, three of whom were by Maroro, the son of Towton and Fair Agnes, and wlio, according to his owner’s account, was o«e of the stoutest and speediest animals he ever had in work. He was, owing to a series of accidents unsuccessful on the turf, but judging from the appearance of his stock, which I now saw for the first time, ho should prove a good sire, as all his progeny that I came across during my visit 'showed a lot of quality, and were, one and all, rare-legged ’uns. Fair Agnes is as handsome as paint, and, as before stated is the dam of Maroro.

PEDIGREE.—By Towton, dam Fair Agnes ; Towton bv Melbourne—Pinezella by Touchstone. (Towton’s full sister Marchioness and half-brother Marquis distinguished themselves on the English Turf, as the former won the Oaks, and the latter ran a desperate second for the Derby, and won the St. Leger.) Fair Agnes by St. Aubyn—Phcebe by Sir Hercules— Woodstock by Theorem. By this it wi’l be seen that the happy " ntek of blood ” which has in Australia been ever so successful, namely—that of Sir Hurcu'es and the Touchstone—is combined in Maroro, in fact not to be Jost sight of by intelligent breeders. Fair Agnes, the dam of Maroro, has left her mark on the New Zealand Turf, as her foah are—lB72, Nellie, by Towtmi; 1873, Maroro, by Towton ; 1874, Chokebore, by Dead Shot. For further particulars, see New Zealand Stud Book. BISMARCK Will Stand at the same ylace. Terms— £2 10s. each Mare, including ®ne month’s gross ; afterwards 2s. Od. per week. All Fees to b® pjd be'ore removal of Mares. Every car® taken, but no responeibility. For further particulars apply to W. POULGRAIN, 526 or H. HONOR, in charge.
