The schooner Onward left Greymouth yesterday morning with a cargo of coals for Gigb°™e s.s. Thomas Russell will probably arrive here to-morrow morning from Napier. The s.s. Bosina will take a load of wool out to the Watson to-morrow morning, and after discharging will proceed on up the coast. The Union Company's Southern Cross, which is being docked and overhauled at Port Chalmers, will be leaving Dunedin on the 14th, and Wellington on the 16th instant, on her way northward. She is due here about Wednesday, the 20th. In consequence of the accident to the Bingarooma’s machinery there will be no steamer for the North on Sunday. She is advertised to leave Gisborne on Thursday. Should the Te Anau arrive to time a supplementary mail will be forwarded by that vessel. Liverpool ranks as the most important port in the world, with an annual tonnage of 2 647,372; London stands second, with a tonnage of 2,330,688; Glasgow third, with 1,432,364; and New York fourth, with 1,153,676. , . Captain Farquhar, of the Thames trader Botomahana, during the strike manned the vessel with his five sons, aged from 19 to 13. Messrs. John Elder & Co. recently launched from their yard at Govan a steel screw steamer for the Cunard Company’s Express line. The Umbria’s dimensions are:—Length overall, 520 feet; beam, 57 feet; depth, 40 feet; gross tonnage, 8,000. The engines for this vessel have been constructed by the builders, and will indicate at sea 12,500 h.p. The Union Steamship Company’s steamer Omapere left Port Chalmers at 10.30 p.m. on Thursday, called at Oamaru on Friday, and at Timaru on Saturday, leaving the latter port at 4.20 p.m. the same day, and arriving here at 10 last night. Had light variable winds and fine weather from Port Chalmers to Cape Campbell, which was passed at 4.50. p.m. Saturday, thence fresh northerly winds to arrival at Wellington. She came into the bay this morning and after discharging caigo and mails went onto Tauranga and Auckland.
