COUNTY COUNCIL ELECTIONS

CAPTAIN FERRIS AT MAKARAKA. Captain Ferris addressed the ratepayers of the Gisborne Riding at Makaraka last night, there being about 50 persons present. The candidate explained the position of the County Council, and showed how it stood financially; also the progress the county had made during the past three years. He pointed out that the outgoing Council, when it assumed office, was saddled with a debt of £2,100, and on the termination of office of the present Council, there would be a credit balance of £BB3. Therefore the new Council would have something to work on, and not be crippled as its predecessors had been when entering office. He then gave a full explanation as to what the revenue of the Gisborne Riding amounted to per annum for the past three years, and also the amount that had been expended in it for the same period. He would not quote in a like manner with regard to the other ridings but would leave . that to be dealt with by the various candidates seeking office. He did not stand up before them to promise impossibilities, but he would promise them honest and straightforward action, if returned, and gave himself credit for having done so during the past three years. He did not consider that anyone seeking support from them was expected to make a long speech and enter into questions which a candidate would do seeking their suffrages for the House of Representatives. The questions the ratepayers should debate in their minds were :—ls the candidate fitted for the trust he seeks to have reposed in him ? Is he a practical man ? And has he any axe to grind ? If they could answer those questions in his favor he would ask them to vote for him.

A few questions were put to the candidate which were answered satisfactorily. Mr. A. B. Newman proposed a vote of thanks to the candidate, which was not seconded.

Major Westrupp proposed a vote of thanks and confidence, which was seconded by Mr. W. Stephenson, and carried unanimously.
