V.R.C. Spring Meeting.

[reuter’s telegrams.] Melbourne, November 1. The V.R.C. Spring Meeting opened today, a large number of spectators being present. The weather was dull and cloudy in the morning, but improved, and before the racing commenced was all that could be desired. Among those present were their Excellencies Sir H. B. Loch (Governor of Victoria), Sir G. Strachan (Governor of Tasmania), and Sir W. E. Robinson (Governor of South Australia). The following are the results of the principal events of the day:— Maribyrnong Plate ; 5 furlongs. Newstead .. 1 Monte Christo .. .. .. 2 Burrelda .. 3 Followed by Uralla and Cracker colt. Time: 1 min. 3 sec. The following horses came to the post:—Arsenal, Danseuse. Lady Claudia, Campanilla, Magnifier, Sanvigon, Chambl is, First Prince, Local Option, Umbra, Uralla, Monte Christo, Corday, Bureldab, Burford, Cairo, Melodious, Newstead, The

Teacher, and Cracker colt. Newstead won by several lengths, Victorian Derby, 1J Mile.

Blucher was scratched at the post, leaving the following eleven horses to face the starter :—Hippogrifj David, Seahorse, Mozart, Leporello, Rufus* Merrium, Bargo, Tremando, Gratitude Md Scandal. Gratitude wa the first to show in front at the start, with Tremado, Mozart and Seahorse next, and Leporello, Bargo, and Hippogriff last. Passing the stand Mertimsr assumed command, half-a-length in advance of Gratitude. Then came Tremendo, Hip* pogriff, Mozart, and Bargo, with Rufue last* Merrium maintained his advantage round the turn, and along the river about a length in front of Gratitude, who was just clear oi Tremando and Bargo. The relative places were unchanged, except as regards Bargo, who had improved his position. At the Abbatoirs Gratitude lesumed the lead, with Merrium at her heels, Tremando, Seahorse and Bargo following in the order indicated* Up to the home turn Gratitude continued to load the field, and was first to enter the straight, with Tremendo, who had come forward, running into second place. Bargo, on the outside, now made his effort, and sueceedcd in passing Tremando, and joined issue with the leader, but only too quickly to relinquish his position in favor of David, who took the lead below the distance. At this point Rufus, who had held his position in the body of the ruck throughout, came with a rush, and quickly overhauling the leaders, tackled David, and won a good race by halLalength. D.J.C. SPRING MEETING. Dunedin, November 8. The following nominations for the Dunedin J.C. Spring Meeting were received on Saturday night :— Hurdle Race, 18 ; St. Andrew's Handicap, 18; Spring Handicap, 20; President’s Handicap, 19; Criterion Stakes, 12; Members' Welter Plate Handicap, 15; Grandstand Handicap, 18. ENGLISH CRICKETERS IN AUSTRALIA [REUTER’S TELEGRAMS.] Adelaide, November 1. The cricket match between the English team and fifteen of Adelaide was resumed here to-day. The home team, with 10 wickets down for 164, continued their first innings, which closed for a total of 217. The English team then went in for the first time, and at the close of the day’s play had lost one wicket for 162 runs.

Later.—ln the first innings of the English Eleven, Ulyett is not out with 99, and Shrewsbury not out with 52.

HUSSAR’S SPORTS. [Own Correspondent.] Duneiin, November 3. The Hussars’ sports were held on Saturday at Forbury, and were very successful. The weather was splendid. The principal horse race resulted as follows Billy .. ~ , a «• 1 Molly Bawn .. ~ ..2 A rifle match was fired on Saturday, at Port Chalmers butts, between 10 men of the Dunedin Rifle Club, and 10 of the L Battery of Artillery. The latter scored 484, and the Rifle Club 449. The volunteers won by 35 points.
