HORTICULTURAL AND FLORICULTURAL SOCIETY.
The annual general meeting of the Horticultural and Floricultural Society was held at the Good Templar’s Hall last night. Annual Report. The following is the report (which was adopted) of the Society for the year ending 30th September, 1884 :—The Committee have to announce that the result of last year’s show was eminently successful. The numerous exhibits in fruit, flowers, and vegetables showed that each exhibition was superior to that proceeding it. Being far more entries and greater variety denote the fact that increased attention is being paid to horticultural pursuits. Owing to circumstances over which the committee has no control the building we engaged for the show proved inadequate io& our requirements, consequently the exhibits were not displayed to the best advantage. We would impress upon the committee which it will be your duty to elect for the forthcoming season, the absolute necessity of obtaining a larger building for the flower show. The receipts last year amounted to £3l; expenses to about £3O. This, with the balance remaining over from the previous year, leaves a credit balance in hand of £9 5s 6d. The present season bids fair to be a prosperous one for garden produce, and we hope that the show will be even more successful than any previous one. We have a right to expect that the number of exhibits will be larger, and we hope the number of special prizes will be in a corresponding ratio. We thus appeal to the generous public to assist and encourage the cultivation of fruits, flowers, and vegetables. The flowers to please the eye and gratify the senses with sweet odours; the luscious fruit to satisfy the palate; and the still more useful vegetable to appease the appetite. We, then, confidently ask the public to support so good an object, and assist us to maintain the reputation of Poverty Bay in its productions. Election of Officers. Officers of the Society to act for the ensuing year were duly elected as under -Dr. Pollen, President; W. L. File, Secretary ; H. Bushnell, Treasurer ; Messrs. H. Bull, sen., J. Parker, Chudleigh, Bartley, Sheriff, Taylor, Tutohen, Bull, jnr., and G. Stevenson, Committee. y Date of Shoic, A resolution was carried to the effect that the show be held in the first week in December. Revision of Schedule. A sub-committee was appointed to meet on Wednesday next for the purpose of revising the schedule, and also to engage a hall for the show.
