Bridget Gately was charged with unlawfully and feloniously throwing herself into a certain river called the Waipaoa on the 25th of October, with intent to kill and murder herself.
Captain G. J. Winter deposed that he remembered the day in question and was then at Ormond. Saw accused on that day. Was crossing at the Ormond ford with Mr. E. A. i’avitt about 11 o’clock. Saw accused walking down the shingle bed towards the river, and while their horses were drinking they noticed a woman and child running down the shingle bank screaming out and waving their hands excitedly. They went to them and saw the accused in the water about ten feet from the bank. The whole of her body was submerged with the exception of the face and the top of the head. Mr. Pavitt was the first to jump off his horse, and catching hold of the woman brought her ashore, when she in a weak voice said, “ Don’t take me out. Don’t take me back.” The water she was in was about 18 inches or two feet. She got bogged in the soft silt and therefore could not get into the deeper water which was only a short distance off. When in the water accused had her head propped up with her right arm and her back to the deep water. She was dressed. They got assistance and accused was removed to where she lived. W. H. Holland gave evidence similar to that of the former witness, On hearing the evidence of Mr. Skillicorn and the constable, his Worship committed the accused for trial at the next sittings of the Supreme Court. In the meantime efforts will be made to have her placed in the asylum at Napier. Horse Stealing. Wi Hinua, alias Henare who was remanded on the 23rd until to-day, on a charge of horse stealing, was committed for trial.
