The Telephone. WITH WHICH INCORPORATED THE POVERTY BAY STANDARD. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING. GISBORNE, MONDAY, OCTOBER 27.
The concluding portion of the Public Works Statement delivered by the Hon. Mr. Richardson on Friday evening last, appears in this evening's issue. The statement created a favorable impression in the minds of honorable members. From the careful preparation it indicates, and Mr. Richardson’s acknowledged ability as a Minister of Public Works, it is not probable that that gentleman has laid himself open to any serious attack from the Opposition benches. When Mr. Richardson resumed his seat, after the delivery of the statement, the Premier, (the Hon. Mr. Stout), informed the House that the Government wished ittobedistinctly understood that the proposals stated by his colleague with regard to the railways in both Islands stood together, and were connected with Bills which the House had already passed. The Government he said were not inclined to take too narrow a view of local claims, but, nevertheless had no notion of seeing one Island raised to a prosperous condition, and the other plunged into gloomy depression, and since there appeared an inclination to bring about such a result, he would add, that the Government would be no party to such a course. Nor would they suffer it. They would sooner that the present session should be entirely barren, and another session immediately follow with, or without, an appeal to the country. Mr. Bryce, who in many quarters is looked upon as the leader of the Opposition, said that the statement was a most important one, but the Premier’s remarks were equally important ; the House therefore should have time to consider, before they began to debate the Public Works Statement. It will be seen from the telegram forwarded to us to-day by our Wellington correspondent, and' published in another column, that the remarks of the Premier above stated, have given rise to much speculation, as to their import, in political circles.
