[Own Correspondent.] Napier, October 27. A seaman, named Michael Tale, belonging to the brigantine Enterprise, was drowned on Friday night by falling off the wharf at the Spit when going aboard. He was sober, but tripped and fell between the wharf and the vessel. It is supposed he must have been stunned in falling, for he disappeared almost immediately. The body has not been recovered. New Plymouth, October 27. At the Police Court on Saturday, John Thomas, connected with the Salvation army, was remanded on a charge of criminal assault on Louisa Elies, at Waitara. John Tonis, charged with stabbing John Bland, was remanded also. Masterton, October 27. The Waipona brewery, untenanted except by a caretaker, was burnt down on Saturday morning, the origin of the fire is unknown, but it is supposed a swagsman had taken refuge in the building. Duneein, October 27. The hospital had a narrow escape from fire on Saturday owing to a defective chimney. The warders mustered and got the extinguishing apparatus to work, and succeeded in quelling the fire before it got much hold. Invercargill, October 27. James McGregor was killed aboard the cutter Grace, at Stewart Island, through the handle of the windlass striking him on the head.
