Among the passengers yesterday by the Wairarapa from Sydney was Mr. Chrisp, an Hospital Bluecoat boy, in full uniform of blue coat and yellow stockings. The Auckland branch of the old blues drove him in a carriage round the city. Mr. Bracken closed his lecturing season at the Opera house last night. The customs detained a cargo of apples by the Zealandia, and 15 per cent, were condemned as infected by the Codlin Moth. Wellington, October 23. Divers who have examined the Lastingham report very favorably, and it is expected the best part of the cargo will be recovered. An official trial trip of the Torpedo boat for Auckland was made yesterday, Captain Fairchild in charge, and several members of Parliament aboard. The engines made 630 revolutions per minute, equal to 174 knots per hour. Christchurch, October 23. The Diocesan Synod was opened on Tuesday. Resolutions were passed last night in favor of petitioning Parliament to amend the Education Act so as to provide for religious instruction during school hours.
