P.B.T.C. SPRING MEETING. ACCEPTANCES. The following acceptances were received on Saturday night:—
The following entries were received for the Maiden Plate Miss Dargon, Sonny, Lizette, Christina, Rangatira, Goshawk, Mormon, Squire, Fear Not. V.A.T.C. MEETING. [Reuter’s Telegrams.] Melbourne, October 18. The Victoria Amateur Turf Club had a second day’s racing to-day at Caulfield. The weather was cold and fine, though cloudy, and there was a large attendance, including His Excellency the Governor and suite. The following is the result of the : — Caulifeld Cup, a handicap of 2000 sovs., 1300 of the said sum to go to the first first horse, in addition to a trophy value 200 guineas, the gift of Mathew O’Shanassy, Esq. ; 500 sovs. to the second, and 200 sovs. to the third. The winner of any handicap race of the value of 100 sovs., after the declaration of the weights, to carry 51b. extra ; of two such races, or any race of the value of 200 sovs., 71b extra; of any such race of the value of 500 sovs., 141 b. extra. The handicap weight of the winner of the S.A.J.C. or A.J.C. Derby to be not less than 7st. 71b., if handicapped below that weight. Penalties not cumulative, except where expressly stated. Vergy, 7st 71b 3 The following twenty-eight horses came to the post:— Britisher, Bend Or, Battalions, Boolka, Capri, Claptrap, Coulstoun, Blink Bonny, Conjecture, Despot, Fryingpan, Flying Jib, Helene, Hastings, Ironhand, Lord Wilton, Lavington, Malua, Martini Henry, Norfolk, Privateer, Ringwood, Rapid, Signor, The Agent, Vernet, Vergy and Yately. A capital start was effected. Rapid at once went to the front, and led past the stand, closely followed by Yately, Vernet, Battalion, Lavington, Blink Bonny, Coulstoun, Signor, Hastings and Claptrap. Then came Lord Wilton, Vergy and Bend Or, just clear of Capri; Martini Henri, Despot, Malua, and The Agent bringing up the rear. Opposite the Stewards Stand Signor fell. Yately now joined Rapid at the turn, and the pair raced round the turn and up the hill, with Helene, Vergy, and Battailion at their heels just clear; Claptrap, Martini Henri, Despot and The Agent falling further to the rear at the back of the course. Yately, who was now going with great vigor, assumed the lead, Rapid resigning second place in favor of Helene and Battalion. Martini Henri had by this time fallen further in the rear. Passing the sod wall, Rapid made a second effort and joined Yately a id Helene, the pace now being terrific. At the turn Fryingpan and Coulstoun made a resolute effort to get up to the leaders, but failed, and Lord Wilton and Blink Bonny assumed a forward position. Turning into the straight Yately was done with, and Blink Bonny came with a rush and took the the lead. Rapid again made another desperate effort to get up, but he retired at the <l s ance, and Lord Wilton, Hastings and Vergy challenged Blink Bonny, wh however,
held the lead and came in an easy winner by fully two lengths, Lord Wilton being next, a length in front of Vergy, Malua fourth, Claptrap, Hastings, Helene, lately, Fryingpan, Norfolk, Coulstoun, Despot, Capri and Martini Henri next, The Agent being last. Time : 2 mins. 42J secs.. The betting at the post was 3—l Vergy 6 — 1 Coulston 10 — 1 Martini Henri 12 — 1 Hastings 12 — 1 Helene 33 — 1 Blink Bonny
