Prince of Wales’ Stakes.—Assegai, Emir Bey, Yankee, Never-miss, Miss Dargon, York, Abraham, Aimee, Forerunner, Kincraig, and Oberon. Handicap Hurdles.—Flying Scud, Pastime, Steel Dust, Wild Dayrell, Blackbird, Denbigh, and Hurricane. Petane Cup Handicap.—Steel Dust, Emir Bey, Assegai, Leonata, Yankee, Otupapa, Christina, Forerunner, and Trigidea. What are the odds about placing the first three horses in the next Melbourne Cup? The following idea from friend “ Asmodeus ” of the Melbourne Leader may give some idea: —“From Dunedin comes intelligence that ‘ Ada Mantua,’ of consultation fame, advertises £lOO to be given away to the first person who places the first, second, and third for tho Melbourne Cup, there being no limit to the number of ways applicants may place them. To reduce the matter to figures, of course the 101 acceptors could be placed in as many different positions as is represented by 101 x 100 x 99, that is to say, 999,900. Providing a person was to lay himself out to accomplish the task of writing all the possible combinations, it would take him 313 days 3 hours, working 12 hours per day, and transcribing 266 each and every hour.”
