MELBOURNE CUP SCRATCHINGS. [Reuter’s Telegrams.] Melbourne, October 7. Frenchman has been scratched for the Melbourne Cup. CESARE WITCH STAKES. London, October 7. The race for the Cesarewitch Stakes to-day resulted as follows :— St. Gatien .. 1 Polemic .. .. .. .. 2 Archduc .. .. .. .. 3 NAPIER RACES. [Own Correspondent.] Napier, October 8. The second day’s races of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club Spring Meeting was held yesterday, and was as well attended as the first day, notwithstanding the weather being ■< 11 and showery. The racing throughout was very good, and the amount put through the totalisator was about £4,700, making in the two days over £9,000. The following are ’ he results :— Handicap Hurdles, 75 sovs., 2 miles. Pastime .. .. .. ..1 Denbigh 2 Minuet .. .. .. .. 3 Three others ran. There was a very exiting finish between Pastime and Denbigh he former eventually winning by about halfsi length. Spring Handicap, 200 sovs., U miles. Trigidea .. .. .. .. 1 Pearl .. .. t e .2 Bayard .. .. ..3 Five others ran. Tigridea won easily by about four lengths.
Maiden Plate, 50 sovs.. 1| mile. Forerunner .. .. .. 1 Christina' .. ~ .. ..2 Misdeal 3 Only these three ran, the others being scratched. It was a well contested race, and was won by h&lf-a-length. Consolation Handicap, 80 sovs., 1 mile. Administratorl Breeze 2 Emir BeyB This was a very good race, and was won by about a length.
Sydney has 100 miles of streets. In the States there are fifteen million horses. At the funeral of a Liverpool athlete a feature of the procession was a line of bicyclists on their machines.
