NAPIER RACES. [Own Correspondent.] Napier, October 7. There was glorious weather yesterday for the first day of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting. There were between 2,000 and 3,000 persons present. Two totalisators were on the ground, and put through about £4,300. The following are the results:— Free Handicap, 60 sovs., 1 mile A distance. Leonora .. ~ ~ .. t Bayard .. ~ f Leonata .. ~ 3 Six others ran. It was an exciting finieh, Leonata being only a neck behind the first two, who ran a dead heat. Captain Russell, owner of Leonora, and Joseph Paul, owner of Bayard, agreed to divide the stake. Maiden Hurdle Race, 50 sovs., 2 miles. Hurricane 1 Steeldust ... ..2 Notice of Motion .. ..3 Denbigh and Blackbird also ran. Denbigh fell at the second hurdle, and took no further part in the race. At the hurdle at the back of the course Blackbird threw his jockey, and although Steeldust made an effort on entering the straight, Hurricane won easily, hard held. Hawke’s Bay Guineas, 200 sovs., 1 mile. Pearl .. 1 Cascade ~ 2 Misdeal 8 Two others ran. Pearl won this event with plenty in hand. Selling Race, 50 sovs., mile. Gabble .. .. .. .. 1 The Barb .. .. .. .. 2 Breeze 3 Four others ran. Gabble won as he liked by a couple of lengths. Flying Handicap, 100 sovs., f-mile. Tigredia 1 Forerunner .. .. .. 2 Emir Bey .. .. .. 3 This event was won easily. TO-DAY’S RACES. Handicap Hurdles. Pastime .. .. ~ .. 1 Denbeigh .. ~ .. .. 2 Minuet 3 Spring Handicap. Trigidea 1 Pearl .. .. ~ .. 2 Bayard 3 Auckland, October 7. The race-horse Krupp, who was injured internally during the voyage from Auckland to Christchurch, was insured for £5OO, to cover all risks. Christchurch, October 7. The race-horse Krupp died yesterday from inflammation of the lungs.
MELBOURNE CUP SCRATCHINGS. [Reuter’s Telegrams.] Melbourne, October 6. Manrico and Paganini have been scratched for the Melbourne Cup. Plausible is quoted to-night in the betting on the Cup at 14 to 1. The annual meeting of the Vincent Jockey Club was held at Ophir last week. It was decided that prize-money to the value of £250 be offered at the Club’s race meeting, which takes place on the Ist and 2nd January, 1885. Joseph Byrnes, the jumper has found more than his match in J. Wade. The men were matched at Sydney recently, five standing jumps, for £25 a-side. At the start the betting was in favor of Byrnes, but after the first trial it came to even money. Wade led off with 48 ft. 11 in. ; Byrnes was 17 in. short, but on his second trial cleared 59 ft. Wade then went 59 ft. 3 in., Byrnes responding with 60 ft. 72| in. After a short spell Wade again came to the mark, and amidst great applause, cleared 61 ft. 5j in. Byrnes had a couple of trials at this distance, but failed. Wade is said to be a beautifully clean j umper.
The Register states that Mr. H. Evans, of the Globe Hotel, Adelaide, who has gone into training for the billiard championship of Australia, has lately accomplished some wondeiful performances. On one occasion he made 1,299 in three breaks, and the next night he capped it by equalling W. J. Peall’s famous record of 1989. Evans made all his points by the aid of the spot stroke, the red being potted 663 times. Some time ago he challenged Weiss, who gave exhibitions in Gisborne recently. The programmee for the Pakuranga Hunt Club Annual Steeplechase Meeting contains a Members Maiden Steeplechase of 25 sovs; Open Selling Steeplechase, 25 sovs; Pakuranga Hunt Club Cup Steeplechase (Handicap), for a piece of plate valued al 30 sovs; Open Steeplechase Handicap of 30 sovs; Members Hurdle Race for a piece of plate value 30 sovs ; and Ladies’ Bracelet, value 15 sovs. Acceptances for Pakuranga Hunt Club Cup and Members Hurdles, and nominations for Open Ste plechas', Oct. 10. Acceptances open and General Entry, October 17.
