Franco-Chinese War.
Reuter’s Telegrams], Hong Kong, October 4. Intelligence has been received here that Admiral Courbet is attacking Kelung, on the Island of Fosmosa, with the intention of taking possession of the town. Strong resistance is being offered by the Chinese troops, and a sharp engagement has been fought, resulting in favor of the French, who have occupied the positions. The French loss is reported as eighteen killed and wounded, and that of the Chinese amounted to 200. A fresh outbreak of hostilities has occurred between the French and Chinese in Tonquin. The Chinese troops stationed between Bac Ha and Langson were observed to be advancing, and the French gunboats on Long Koi proceeded to reconnoitre them. An attacking party landed and severe fighting ensued in which the French sustained a loss of thirty killed and wounded. Admiral Lecpes, com mander of the China squadren, is now cooperating with Admiral Courbet, and with a portion of the French fleet is attacking Tamsui, in Formosa. On the completion of the bombardment Admiral Lecpes will occupy the port.
