Big Fire in Invercargill.
[Own Correspondent.] Invercargill, October 4. A destructive fire occurred in Dee-street, on Thursday morning. It started in D. Smith’s drapery establishment, which was completely destroyed, and owing to a failure in the supply of water it subsequently spread to the premises of Ross (fruiterer), Cleave (seedsman), and Cowan & Wilson (ironmongers) all of which were burned down, but a good deal of stock was previously got out. Other places, including the Prince of Wales Hotel, were in great danger, while Sloans’ Theatre was somewhat damaged. The insurances amount to £21,100, and are spread over the National, New Zealand, Royal, Northern, Australia Mercantile Union, Norwich Union, Equitable, Colonial, South British, Liverpool, London and Globe, North British, Hamburg, Magdeburg, United, and Standard.
