[Per United Press Association.] Wellington, October 1. Mr. Thomas Bracken has commenced a Monday evening series of lectures with “ An evening with the poets of Ireland.” Christchurch, October 1. The Selwyn County Council passed a resolution yesterday urging upon Government the advisability of endowments being made for the maintenance of hospitals. Napier, October 1. The business of Wardrop and Co. has been purchased by John Hindmarsh, jun., F. Bee, and W. H. Cooper. Nelson, October 1. Satisfactory news has been received from the Wakamarina Gorge Company’s claim, Captain Palmer, who is in charge of the works, having telegraphed that he has pumped out 7 feet 6 inches of water, which is 6 inches lower than the level attained before, and that the pump is working exceedingly well. The full depth of water which has to be disposed of is 27 feet, and it is to be hoped that the reward for which this company has worked so long and perseveringly may soon be within their reach.
