A return of the lands purchased and leased from natives in the North Island, under the Immigration and Public Works Act, 1870, was presented to Parliament on Tuesday. In Hawke’sßay the area so purchased is 132 999 acres, the total cost being £28,466. Throughout the North Island 3,958,233 acres have been purchased and 129,148 acres leased, while negotiations for 1,029,949 acres are in progress, or a total of 5,117,330 actes. The expenditure to the 31st March last was £921,962, while existing liabilities amount to £ 195,836. T wenty-seven blocks in Auckland are subject to incumbrances in the shape of leases u ith from nine to eighty-eight years, to run.
