The New Licensing Bill.

[Own Correspondent.] Christchurch, Setember 27. A public meeting was held last evening to oppose the passage of the Licensing Act Amendment Bill. It was attended by about 30 persons, the weather being rather incle ment. Mr. W. Chrystall presided. A resolution was passed to the effect that Mr. Steward’s bill was uncalled for; that the meeting entirely disapproved of any scheme for compensation for refusal of renewal of licenses; that optional endorsement clauses would lessen the restraint which the law at present places around the trade, and would be fraught with terrible evil to the community.
