A number of Auckland militamen whose land claims have been disallowed intend convening a public meeting to discuss the subject. The rumor that Judge Gillies and Judge Johnston had arranged for a temporary interchange of circuits proves to be without foundation. Judge Gillies has made no arrangement for going to Dunedin. Westport, September 27. Work at the Westport mine is proceeding merrily at present, the result of an improved bar. The system of haulage —comprising the endless chain and electric signal bells—is now extended tn the portion of the mine known as ‘ Smith’s outcrop.’ This is the beginning of the famous Coalbrookdale seam and the body of coal at this spot is about 16ft 9in in size. The coal now being wrought surpasses in quality even the grand article which the company have lately been placing in the market. In appearance it is bright, and possesses the essential of hardness in such degree as will give an advantage in handling over all classes of coals hitherto shipped from the West Coast. Mr. Elliot, mine manager, expects to ba putting out upwards of 150 tons per day of this particular coal in the course of a fortnight.
