ADULTERATED FOOD. [Per Press Association.] Auckland, September 20. Anbury Fitzgerald has been committed for trial for house-breaking and entering. He is believed to be afflicted with insanity. Of five samples of groceries furnished to the provincial analysist by the inspector under the Adulteration of Food Act, four are found to be adulterated. Wanganui, September 20. In the Supreme Court yesderday James Richards was sentenced to 18 months for sheep stealing. During the recent rains a heavy slip occurred on the Field’s track, and communication with upper Wanganui and Murimotu is completely stopped. The case of Wiremu Hori and Hopa Heremaia, charged with cattle stealing, occupied the Court all yesterday. At one o’clock the jury had not agreed, and they were locked up all night. The civil business will not be taken before Wednesday next. Napier, September 20. This week there have been two deaths from exposure in the country districts, namely, a man named Kent, who had been drinking, and a Maori woman. Blenheim, September 20. Joseph Kirkwood, a single man, aged 28, was killed on the Dashwood Pass contract yesterday by a fall of earth. Woodville, September 20. A settler named Makensen was drowned yesterday while attempting to cross the Manawatu river on foot at the ford leading to Puketoi. The body has no not yet been recovered.
Dunedin, September 20. At the inquest on McGeikaw, found dead on Flagstaff Hill, a verdict of death from exposure was returned.
