Local and General.
O’Meara’s Estate.—The first meeting of creditors in the estate of W. O’Meara, which was to take place this morning, was adjourned for one week. Gas Company.—The usual monthly meeting of the directors of the Gas Company took place yesterday afternoon. Nothing of importance was done, and only the ordinary routine business was gone through. The Company has already expended some £5,700 on their works, &c., up to the present time. Institute.—The lecture to be delivered by Mr. W. F. Crawford to-morrow evening, will be exceedingly interesting. The lecturer has gone to great expense and trouble in providing apparatus for a series of experiments by which he will illustrate the whole art of photography. The public are invited. Mails.—-The direct steamer Aorangi will leave Lyttelton on Saturday the 27th instant for London via Rio de Janiero and Plymouth, and is expected to occupy 42 days on her homeward run. Mails for London by this steamer will close on Saturday the 20th Sept, per Te Anau. Library.—A meeting of the Library Committee was held last night. Present—Messrs. Sigley, Featon, Bourke and Warren. It was resolved that Mr. W. A. O’Meara be asked to accept office as secretary, as Mr. O’Ryan was unable to attend to the. duties. Circulars from Cameron & Co. soliciting orders for memorial volume of Marcus Clarke’s works were ordered to stand over until next meeting. The following accounts were passed for paymentSievewright & DeLautour, £l3 16s. lid. law costs, &c., preparing lease of buildings, &c. ; P. McFarlane, expenses for two concerts, £5 15s. with 10s. discount ; Telephone, £1 7s. 6d. advertising and jobbing, tickets concert, 15s: Webb, 15s. A resolution was passed to the effect that a hearty vo‘e of thanks be accorded to Messrs. Sievewright & DeLautour for their munificent donation. It was further resolved that the directors of the Gas Company be written to on the subject of holding a “ Gas fete ” in connection with the Library and Gas company. A list of books amounting to £2l ss. which were ordered by the committee, through Mr. Browne, were approve I. The committee expressed their thanks for donations received from Messrs. Wilson, Chambers, Keefer, and Morrow, and to others for contributions in the shape of papers and journals. The Librarian’s report was read and adopted.
