The North Island Main Trunk Railway.
COMMITTEE OF INQUIRY. [Per United Press Association.] Wellington, September 16. The North Island Trunk Railway Route Committee held its second meeting yesterday. The Hon. W. J. Richardson (Minister of Public Works) was Chairman. The following witnesses were examined :— Mr. J. W. A. Marchant (Chief Surveyor and Commissioner of Crown Lands), Wellington ; Mr. R. J. GiH (Under-Secretary Native Land Purchase Department) ; Mr. J. McKerrow (Surveyor General and Secretary of Crown Lands) ; and Mr. J. Blackett (Chief Engineer for the North Island). It is understood to be the intention of the Committee to sit daily, and to ask the House to allow it to sit while the House is sitting. Upwards of forty witnesses have already baen summoned.
Later—The North Island Railway Committee met this morning, and examined Mr. John Sheehan, Mr. Eochfort, surveyor, and Mr. Fraser, who had passed through the country, which the lines traverse.
