SPORTING.
FOOTBALL MATCH AT WAIROA. [from our own correspondent.] Wairoa, September 11. A well contested match was played here yesterday afternoon between the local footballers and a Native team from the Napier country district, dubbed the “ Wanderers.” The local men won by 1 goal and 1 try to the visitors 1 try. The match with the Napier Club has been postponed on account of the bad weather. Wairoa would like to play Gisborne. [reuter’s telegrams.] London, September 11. The match which has been arranged for to-day, between the Australian Cricketers and the All England team has been abandoned and in its place a match is taking place with the South of England, which is to be the final one of the tour. The Home team consists of the following :—Messis. A. J. F. Ford, W. G. Grace, Horher, W. W. Read. Whitfield, Banter, Maurice Read, Wood, Woof, Wootton, and O’Brien. Later—The Home team have been all disposed of in the first innings for 56 runs. The Australians have nine wickets down for 159. Sept. 12. The match was concluded to-day, resulting in a victory for the visitors by an innings and five runs.
