THE AFRICAN DIFFICULTY. [reuteb’s telegrams.] London, September 9. Arrived— Orient steamship Lusitania at Plymouth from Melbourne. The support extended to the new Oriental Bank Company is considered sufficient to justify operations being carried on. The response from Australian shareholders is disappointing. Sir Richard Temple, Bart., in an able paper read at a meeting of the British Association now being held at Montreal, stated that 13 per cent, of the world’s commerce pertains to the British colonies and dependencies. He also stated that the average earnings of the Australians were the highest in the world. The American papers express intense surprise at the defeat of Hanlan by Beach. The Spectator states that the proposed alterations by the French Senate in the Reci’ diviste Bill do not touch the real objections raised by the Colonies. At Mr. Gladstone’s meeting at Edinburgh he confirmed his speech on the Franchise Bill in the House of Commons. He denied the right of the House of Lords to force an appeal to the country on the measure. A report has been circulated to the effect that the sum of £BO,OOO has been embezzled by foreign officials in the Egyptian Minister of Finance’s Department. The report lacks confirmation. The Homeward mails via Suez, Brindisi and Melbourne, dated July 29, were delivered here yesterday. Intelligence to hand from the West Coast of Africa regarding the annexation of Lieut. Cameron’s trading station at Bimbra by the German commission under Dr. Nachigl, proves that the Natives of the district are hostile to the Germans and refused to give allegiance to the Imperial officers. St. Petersburg, September 9. The Czar has been well received at Warsaw, and a local demonstration has been organised in honor of His Majesty’s visit to that city. Warsaw, September 9. The Czar and Czarina drove in an open carriage without any escort through the principal streets of this city to-day. Their Majesies were everywhere received with loyal demonstrations. Cairo, September 9. Earl Northbrook and Lord Wolsely arrived here to-day. Naples, September 9. Over six hundred fresh oases of cholera occurred here during the past twenty-four hours, and 270 deaths are reported to have taken place during the same time.
