A change is now being made in the stations of first-class police sergeants. Sergeant Anderson, wh<> has had sole charge of the police here for the past six years, is about to be transferred to Wanganui, and will be succeeded by Sergeant Goodhall, of Hawera. General regret is expressed at the removal of Sergeant Anderson, who is a most popular and most efficient member of the force. The Government steamer Stella, which left for Kaipara this morning, took up the necessary lighting apparatus for the lighthouse. Christchurch, September 10. The New Zealand Shipping Company have received a cable reporting the launch of the new steamer, the Kaikora. Auckland, September 10. A concert, organised on board the Manapouri by Ryman’s Comedy Company and Webb’s Marionette Company, on behalf of the widows and orphans of those drowned at the wreck of the Lastingham, passed off successfully. At the annual banquet held last night of Crimean veterans, Captain McPherson (93rd Highlanders) presided. All arms of the service were represented. The Mayor was present. Tauranga, September 10. A years’ extension of time for completion of the Tauranga-Rotorua Railway has been granted. A cable to that effect has been sent by Mr. G. V. Stewart, who is now in London.
