INTERPROVINCIAL.

IMPORTANT DECISIONS. A RICH FIND. [Per United Press Association.] Duneiin, September 8. Two important judgments were delivered by Judge Williams on Friday, in banco. The first concerned a claim made by Messrs. Briscoe and Co., against the Minister for Public Works for goods destroyed in the fire at the Dunedin railway station sheds last year. The Judge held that at the time of the fire the department had custody of the goods simply for the purpose of completing their contract as carriers, and were responsible for ordinary loss. In the case of Pearson v. the Lands Board, his Honor was satisfied that several of the purchasers were used as instruments by Gellibrand and Co., and also that there was evidence from which a jury might infer that purchasers must have been aware that they were not really taking up the land on their own account. The appeal was therefore dismissed. Wellington, September 8. The s.s. lonic sailed for London direct at four o’clock on Saturday afternoon. Ross, September 8. On Friday night the working manager of the United Gold Mining Company caused some excitement by exhibiting a dish containing about 35 ounces of gold, the result of the company’s partial washing up. The trial battery at Cedar Reefs is finished. A trial crushing will shortly be made. Port Chalmers, September 8. Arrived — Hurunui ship, 88 days from London.
