THE MUNICIPAL CUP. TRAINING NOTES. The seven horses entered for this event are all in active work, and their respective trainers have every confidence that their charges will all come to the post to-morrow week. It is rather early to predict a result among a field of such variegated ability, but we may form some opinion from their past performances. The first on the card is Sir Henry L, a steady old stager, who has already won this event several times. He always runs to win, and will be among the first three. St, Andrew is an aged horse, and, although new to this event, has done good work in other races. He always commands a good deal of attention, and invariably justifies the confidence reposed in him. He will not have much difficulty in securing a place. The Tattersall’s Club are making great efforts with their nomination, and are giving him tough exercise. He will make a big struggle for third place, and will probably win.
Sir Henry Clay, and the County Councillor are doing steady work, but will probably be reserved for other engagements. Gentle Joseph, I hear, is very dickey on his pins, and will require careful handling. He is very much given to bolting through every loop hole that presents itself. His principal work lately has been done in the Whataupoko training paddocks, but excitement and hard feed have considerably upset him. His Auckland land sale engagements will prevent his success in the present event.
As for Doodle-em-buck, he will most probably be made use of by the clerk of the course to clear the Chinamen and stray dogs off. He is in very bad condition, and can scarcely be made fit by the day of the race. My tip is therefore Sir Henry L. .. .. .. 1 St. Andrew 2 Tattersall’s Club Colt.. .. 3 With Sir Henry Clay and the County Councillor close up, while Gentle Joseph and Doodle-’em-buck will have a good struggle for last place.
