BOROUGH COUNCIL.

SPECIAL MEETING. A special meeting of the Council, attended by the same members as the Harbor Board, was held last night to receive tenders for the Turanganui Bridge. They were as follows :—

Mr. Tutchen moved that the tenders be held over for a fortnight, until the obtaining of the remaining £750 was settled. Mr. Joyce seconded. Cr. Smith moved, “ That Mr. Houlden’s tender be accepted.” He was sure every one would be glad to see the tender gained "by a local man. It was too late to talk about holding the tenders over. Cr. Lewis seconded. He was surprised at anyone proposing to delay the work after going so far. Mr. Tutchen didn’t know why he had been sat on twice that night. The ratepayers were taxed quite enough without this extra burden. Cr. Kenny saw great force in what Cr. Smith said, but what would they do if the Government refused the £750. They were asking for a good deal just now. The "expenditure, of the money would, no doubt, do great good to the place at the present juncture. Cr. Joyce could not see any good to be derived from accepting the tender. His Worship knew they could get £3OOO, and supposed the Engineer had made provision for bringing the work within that sum. He thought it would be no hardship to the contractor to let the matter stand over for a time. It would meet the case to postpone signing the bond for a fortnight. Mr. Kenny would vote for accepting the tender conditionally, but thought the £135 need not be taken into consideration. Several other gentlemen spoke, after which the question was put that the tender be accepted. The voting was—Ayes : Porter, Townley, Lewis, Moore, Smith, Hepburn, Kenny. Noes : Joyce, Brown, Tutchen. The meeting then adjourned.
