VOLUNTEER APPOINTMENTS. CAVALRY CORPS DISBANDED. NEW LIGHTHOUSE AT KAIPARA. NEW THEATRE. A LARGE YIELD OF GOLD. DEGREES CONFERRED. [Per Press Association] . Wellington, August 29. J. M. Jamieson, late of the Dunedin Naval Volunteers, is gazetted an honorary Major of the New Zealand Volunteer Force. Two troops of cavalry at Waikato and also the Hawera Light Horse, have been disbanded. T. A. Phillips, of Selwyn, has resigned his position as-Justice of the Peace. Notice is given in the Gazette that a lighthouse is in course of erection at Kaipara Heads, and it is anticipated that the light will be ready for exhibition about the month of December next. The lighthouse is situated on the North Head of Kaipara harbor. The light will bo a second order flashing white light, and will show a flash every ten seconds. A company for building a new theatre will be registered shortly, all shares having been taken up.

The medical attendants of Mr. Woods, M.L.C., report that he is no better, and doubts are entertained as to his recovery, The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co,, have received the following telegram :—London, 26th inst.—The wool sales progress firmly. Scoured has advanced 4d. to Id. per lb. up to date, 117,000 bales have been sold. Wheat—Adelaide, f.a.q., worth c.i.f., to arrive, 355. per 480 lbs. Thames, August 29. A crushing of one ton of quartz from the Moa Creek was treated nt the Golden Crown battery. It gave 2ozs. lldwts. gold valued at £3 14s. 6d. per oz. Auckland, August 29. B.A. Diplomas were presented yesterday at the Choral Hall by Bishop Cowie (ViceChancellor’s delegate), to Miss Clementine Fmily Margaret Harrison, Mr. Bartholomew Cronin (Head Master Tuaka School), and Mr. Walter Henry Airey, the three successful undergraduates in the last University examination. There were present on the platform a large number of graduates in distinctive acedemical dress. FAPIsr, August 29. The Salvation Army made a start in Napier last night.
